Grounding Basics
What is grounding?
Grounding — also referred to as Earthing — simply means putting your body in direct contact with the natural electrical field that lives on the surface of the earth.
You can reach that connection by walking barefoot outdoors, or by relying on "barefoot substitutes" like the ones we explain across our site. These original GroundingWell items work by tapping into the ground port of your home outlets, or through a simple ground rod kit, to link you with the Earth's energy. Because GroundingWell products are built from conductive materials, they can carry the Earth's energy into your body whenever your skin touches them.
What is the difference between grounding & earthing?
Earthing and Grounding both describe reconnecting with the Earth's subtle, natural energy, and the two words are frequently treated as the same thing.
That said, some people draw a line between them. They apply "Earthing" to the act of touching your body directly to the Earth's surface with bare skin, such as walking barefoot on the ground. "Grounding," by contrast, is often used to mean connecting electrical devices to the Earth so as to avoid shocks and hazards — a completely different use. While that distinction may matter to electricians or engineers, for most people the two terms are interchangeable when describing contact with the Earth's surface for health and wellness.
Reconnecting with the Earth's energy can be as easy as walking barefoot outside on grass, sand, or concrete.
Alternatively, you can ground yourself using the original, time-tested, durable, and safe GroundingWell products, sometimes called "barefoot substitutes." Our site has more detail on these items.
What is the technology behind grounding products?
The technology behind GroundingWell products is quite straightforward. To begin with, every product is built from a conductive material. The GroundingWell sleep systems have silver threading woven throughout. Those conductive materials pass the Earth's energy to you through a ground cord that plugs either into the ground port of an electrical outlet or into the optional GroundingWell Ground Rod. The products are durable, safe, and available across a wide, affordable price range! GroundingWell.com is here to help you find the GroundingWell system that best suits your lifestyle.
How does earthing affect dogs, cats & other indoor animals?
Pets, much like people, can gain a great deal from grounding — particularly if they live mostly indoors and rarely get to connect with the Earth's electrons the way their wild relatives do.
Grounding gives pets benefits similar to those it gives humans. In fact, if you lay an Earthing sheet on your bed, pets frequently move toward it on instinct.
Grounding may help lower inflammation, improve circulation, and support collagen production, among other effects. Those benefits reach indoor animals too. On top of that, grounding may ease stress and anxiety in indoor pets.
Plenty of customers have noticed that their pets are naturally attracted to grounded bedsheets and other products. They appear to sense something helpful and familiar, even if they can't put it into words. Their behavior speaks to the benefits they feel.
Can grounding help with Neuropathy?
While no studies specifically look at grounding's effect on neuropathy, there is a solid chance it could help the condition, for these reasons:
1. It is proven to stimulate blood flow. Neuropathy — especially diabetic neuropathy — comes from damage to the capillaries and blood vessels that feed the nerves in your extremities (hands and feet). Grounding boosts circulation, meaning more blood reaches these areas, which supports the healing and regeneration of the nerves there.
2. It reduces inflammation. Neuropathy also stems from nerves damaged by inflammation. The electrons you gain through grounding may neutralize the positively charged free radicals in the body that are known to drive inflammation. By cutting down those free radicals, grounding could ease inflammatory conditions, including the inflammation frequently tied to neuropathy.
3. Pain Relief: A number of studies indicate grounding can lessen chronic pain. Since neuropathy usually involves nerve pain, grounding might bring relief by shifting the electrical activity in the nervous system or by lowering inflammation.
4. Stress Reduction: Grounding has been said to produce a calming effect, which could help given that stress can worsen neuropathy symptoms. By easing stress and encouraging relaxation, grounding might indirectly help manage the condition.
5. Sleep Improvement: Better sleep is another possible benefit of grounding. Because quality sleep is essential to healing and pain control, improved rest can indirectly aid the management of neuropathy symptoms.

General Product Questions
How do I test my GroundingWell™ Sheet or Mat?
To check whether your GroundingWell™ product is functioning, you'll need a multimeter or voltmeter, which you can pick up at any hardware store.
The device measures your body voltage. If the grounding product is working, your body voltage will drop the moment you place any part of your body on the mat or sheet.
Here is a video tutorial on how to test your GroundingWell products (Click this Link)
Do grounding products emit EMFs or magnetic fields?
No. Grounding products give off no EMF radiation and no magnetic or electric fields. That's because they don't use live electricity — they only connect to the earth.
You can watch a video test of the grounding bed sheet showing that it emits no wifi, no EMF signals, and no electromagnetic fields.

Why can't I detect any continuity in the grounding cord?
This is most likely a limitation of your multimeter. Every one of our grounding cords contains a built-in 50,000 Ohm resistor, a safety feature that prevents any unexpected current from traveling through the cord into the grounding product, while still letting all your excess body voltage discharge into the ground.
Most multimeters include a continuity test function, a fast way to see if a circuit is open or closed. That function, however, generally relies on a threshold resistance value (often a few hundred ohms) to judge whether the circuit is continuous. It may not be suited to accurately reading high resistance values like the 50,000 Ohm value of our cord.
Will it work if I live in an apartment?
Yes. All of our grounding products work perfectly well in high-rise apartments. No matter which floor you're on, the grounding socket stays properly grounded.
What if my home doesn't have a grounding outlet?
You can use our grounding rod. Push it into the earth, run the 40 foot cord into your home, and plug it into your GroundingWell product.
Will grounding products interfere with my Pacemaker or Metal Implants?
There is no evidence that grounding interferes with pacemakers or metal implants. Using our grounding products is no different from walking barefoot or lying down outside on the ground. To our knowledge, no one with a pacemaker or implant has ever been told to avoid walking barefoot outdoors.
Grounding does have a helpful anticoagulant (blood-thinning) effect that lowers the risk of blood clots and improves circulation. This could add to the effect of anticoagulant or blood-thinning medications. For that reason, we recommend checking with your doctor before using grounding products while on such medications.
Here is a study showing how grounding improves blood circulation.
You may bring this to your doctor and ask whether indoor grounding is right for you:
Many of our customers use grounding products alongside pacemakers and metal implants with no trouble. But if you feel uncertain, please check with your doctor before beginning indoor grounding.
What plug type should I select?
This depends on the country you live in:
Canada and the United States:
Choose the "USA Plug" option. It does not include an adaptor, because our grounding wire is made to plug straight into the bottom hole of your socket — the grounding socket — with no adaptor needed.
United Kingdom:
Choose the "UK Plug" option.
Germany, France, and other EU countries:
Choose the "EU Plug" option
Australia and New Zealand:
Choose the "AU/ NZ Plug" option
Singapore:
Singapore uses the "UK Plug", so please pick that option
Malaysia:
Malaysia typically uses the "UK Plug"
Indonesia:
Indonesia has 2 plug types: type C and type F. The type F plug matches the "EU Plug".
*Please note we cannot support Type C sockets, as they are not grounded.
What is better: a grounding mat or grounding sheets?
Both grounding mats and grounding sheets link your body to the Earth's electrical charge. Sheets suit sleeping best, while mats are more flexible for use at a desk, on the floor, or on a bed.
GroundingWell™ Sheet Product Questions
How do I know if my grounding sheet is working?
You can confirm your GroundingWell™ grounding sheet is working by making sure the cord is firmly plugged into a properly grounded outlet. When your skin makes contact with the sheet and the outlet is grounded, the conductive fibers let the grounding connection do its job.
How do I set up a grounding sheet?
Setting up a GroundingWell™ grounding sheet is easy. Lay the sheet on your bed just like a normal fitted or flat sheet, attach the included grounding cord to the sheet's connector, and plug the other end into the grounding port of a wall outlet. Once it's connected, direct skin contact with the sheet activates the grounding effect.
Which side of the grounding sheet goes up?
The conductive side of a grounding sheet should face up. That side holds the conductive materials — often silver threads — that carry the Earth's energy to your body. Sleeping directly on that surface, or with a thin cotton sheet over it, helps keep the conductivity intact.
Why does my grounding sheet shock me?
A grounding sheet shouldn't deliver an electric shock, since it connects only to the grounding port and not to electrical current. A slight static sensation can happen if the outlet isn't properly grounded or if static builds up in the room. Checking the outlet and your setup usually clears it up.
How much silver should a grounding sheet have?
A grounding sheet contains conductive materials that create an electrical link with the Earth. GroundingWell™ sheets use 95% organic cotton and 5% conductive silver woven fabric to give you a comfortable, breathable surface that supports grounding when it's connected to a grounded outlet and touched by your skin.
How long should you lay on a grounding sheet?
There's no strict time limit for using a grounding sheet. Many people use them all night while sleeping, since longer contact means more exposure to the grounding connection. Consistent overnight use is often recommended for the best results.
How long does it take to feel the effects of a grounding sheet?
Some users notice relaxation or better sleep within the first few nights. Even so, many grounding guides suggest using the sheet consistently for several weeks before you see changes in sleep quality or overall comfort.
GroundingWell™ Mat Product Questions
How do I clean and care for the GroundingWell™ Mat?
Keep it out of direct sunlight to extend the life of the PU leather.
To clean the mat, wipe the surface with mild soap, detergent, or cleaning wipes. Then rinse with water and dry it off with a cloth or paper towel.
How long will the GroundingWell™ Mat last?
With the right care, the GroundingWell™ Mat can last a lifetime. It's made from durable leatherette that doesn't break down over time.
You simply need to keep it dry and away from water or excess moisture.
Can I wear socks on the Grounding Mat?
Yes — you can still ground through cotton socks with no problem.
How do I know if my grounding mat is working?
To be sure your GroundingWell™ grounding mat is working, check that it's plugged into a grounded outlet and that the cord is firmly attached. When your bare skin touches the mat, the conductive materials let electrons from the Earth flow through the mat and into your body.
Can you sleep on a grounding mat?
Yes, you can sleep on a grounding mat. Many people set the mat on their mattress or under a fitted sheet and keep skin contact while they sleep. Overnight use gives you several hours of grounding contact and is commonly recommended.
Can you put a sheet over a grounding mat?
Yes, you can place a thin natural-fiber sheet — such as cotton or linen — over a grounding mat. Natural fabrics still allow conductivity, whereas thick or synthetic materials may weaken the grounding effect.
Can you plug a grounding mat into a power strip?
Most grounding mats should plug directly into the grounding port of a wall outlet to guarantee a proper earth connection. Some power strips may not deliver true grounding, so it's best to check the manufacturer's instructions or test the outlet.
How long should you stand on a grounding mat?
Many grounding recommendations suggest standing or sitting on a grounding mat for roughly 30–40 minutes a day to feel potential benefits. Longer sessions or overnight use are also options, depending on what you prefer.
How long should you use a grounding mat each day?
Daily grounding sessions usually run from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on how you use the mat. Some people, for instance, use it while working at a desk, while others keep it in place overnight during sleep for extended grounding contact.
What side of the grounding mat goes up?
The conductive surface of the grounding mat should face upward. That's the side made for skin contact, allowing electrons from the Earth to move through the mat and into your body.
GroundingWell™ Bedsheet Product Questions
Can I put a regular sheet over the grounding sheet?
For the best results, grounding works most effectively when your bare skin touches the grounded GroundingWell products directly.
While some of the Earth's energy can travel through thin layers when moisture is present, direct skin contact is still the most effective route (even a single fingertip works out in nature).
We advise against putting another sheet on top of the grounding sheet, since it can disrupt conductivity. Rest assured, our grounding sheets are designed to be very comfortable for sleep, and regular washing is recommended to keep them performing at their best.
Can I wear pajamas while sleeping on the grounding sheet?
Yes, you can absolutely wear pajamas while sleeping on GroundingWell sheets. While direct skin contact maximizes the grounding benefits, you don't have to sleep naked on the sheet. Comfortable pajamas or sleepwear are perfectly fine, as long as some part of your body — arms, legs, or feet — stays in direct contact with the sheet.
It's worth noting, though, that uncovered skin touching the grounding sheet gives more targeted grounding benefits. That can be especially useful if you have particular areas of concern that could gain from the grounding process, since it may speed up healing in those spots.
For stronger conductivity and effectiveness, it's generally best to use the grounding sheet directly on your mattress or bedding, with no extra sheet on top. This allows better direct contact with the grounding material and maximizes the grounding experience.
In short, the key is keeping certain parts of your body in contact with the grounding sheet as you sleep. Choose whatever feels most comfortable for you, while making sure there's direct skin contact in those specific areas to get the grounding benefits you're after.
How do I wash my grounding sheets?
Your GroundingWell sheets contain silver thread, which is naturally antibacterial and odor resistant. That means they need less washing than ordinary sheets. Still, it's important to keep the sheets free of sweat and natural skin oils in order to protect their conductivity.
DO's:
- Wash your sheets twice a month, or whenever they need it
- Hand wash is recommended, or machine wash on a gentle cycle
- Use cold water only
- Air dry only — do not tumble dry
- Wait one hour after applying lotions or body oils before touching the sheets.
DON'Ts:
- Do not wash with bleach or fabric softener.
- Avoid whitening detergents or oxi-detergents.
- Do not use detergents that contain oils such as lavender or coconut oil.
- Avoid dryer sheets.
- Do not apply lotions or body oils to your skin right before bed.
- Do not iron
- Do not tumble dry
Please note that using any of the items listed above could damage the silver threads and reduce the effectiveness of the sheets or leave them nonconductive. By following these guidelines, you'll keep the conductive properties of your GroundingWell sheets and enjoy their health benefits for far longer.
How long will these sheets last?
With proper care and maintenance, our sheets are made to deliver grounding benefits and can last just as long as regular cotton bedsheets. Like any well-kept bedding, their lifespan is comparable, letting you enjoy the grounding benefits over an extended period.
Following the care instructions that come with the sheets is essential to their longevity. Regular washing and care will help preserve their conductivity and keep them in top condition.
Rest assured that with proper use and care, you can expect our grounding sheets to offer the same durability and comfort as your everyday cotton bedsheets. So you can keep enjoying the grounding benefits while using them just like ordinary bedding for years to come.
What are your grounding sheets made of?
Our GroundingWell Sheets are expertly made from a blend of 95% high-quality cotton and 5% silver. Adding silver as a conductive element lets the sheet be effectively grounded, while innovative grid weaving techniques ensure a smooth transfer of beneficial free electrons from the Earth straight to your skin.
We place deep value on both comfort and effectiveness in our products. That's why, while developing our GroundingWell Sheets, we deliberately chose to prioritize comfort with a higher share of cotton. This makes sure our customers enjoy maximum comfort (no scratchiness against bare skin) while still getting the full benefits of grounding. Our sheets are made to be highly usable, making your Earthing experience genuinely enjoyable.
Can I use the grounding products during winter time?
Yes — winter is the perfect season for indoor grounding products. Skip the harsh weather outside and ground in the comfort of your own home!
